WordPress Website Redesign Idaho Transportation Department
Serving Idaho travelers with design & content solutions
The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) website is a central information hub for Idaho residents, visitors, and contractors. It delivers everything from DMV resources to real-time road conditions, construction updates, transportation project notices, and contractor guidance.
The existing site was organized around internal departments rather than the people using it. ITD’s vision for a redesign was clear: create a modern, accessible, helpful site that could serve as a national model for state transportation agencies.
Content prioritization based on stakeholder input
During the discovery phase of the project, we took a close look at the website's users from every angle. We gathered feedback from relevant stakeholders like the Idaho Transportation Board, contractors, Idaho residents, and ITD staff.
A new web strategy became clear:
- Cater menu options to user needs instead of ITD department structure
- Surface the most frequently requested information
- Reduce the number of calls coming into ITD by making answers easy to find online
Idaho-inspired and frictionless design
Our goal was to create a new visual experience that felt authentic without getting in the way of what users came to do, drawing inspiration from the beauty of Idaho itself. We built the design system with a few key elements: using a combination of blues and bright colors from ITD’s brand guidelines, and featuring aerial images of prominent bridges and highways crossing the beautiful Idaho landscape. Clear typography and iconography inspired by road signage help users navigate content.
The new homepage serves as a straightforward guide to the information people look for most, helping to reduce phone calls into ITD. Five tabs at the top of the page prompt users to quickly find content tailored to their needs—whether they’re motorists, pilots, truckers, contractors, etc.
Autonomy and guardrails for content managers
For this new WordPress setup, we took a hybrid approach to user roles and permissions to create both autonomy and guardrails for their large, decentralized content management team. We created purpose-built templates for each content type, giving staff across departments the structure they need while still allowing flexibility in how they create and manage their content.
