Aten Accessibility Review Process

Free Consultation Call

Aten schedules a call with the client to:

  • Find out the potential client’s accessibility knowledge, worries, and needs
  • Aten will run through a review of the site on the call, detailing exactly what Aten tends to look for from an accessibility standpoint, and gauge the level of compliance from a high level
  • Discuss next steps

Aten then sends the potential client an SOW detailing the process of a full scale  accessibility review of their site.

Accessibility Audit & Results Analysis

Audit

Aten will conduct a thorough review of the site’s accessibility compliance based on the  latest WCAG guidelines. Tools and methods used will include:

  • Automated testing for code and content related errors and warnings using Aten’s preferred technology, unless otherwise specified
  • Keyboard testing for usability issues and improvements
  • Manual reviews using human logic and best practices
  • Recommended code improvements related to screen reader implementation and usage

Summary Report

Issues found in the review process will be detailed and ranked so the potential client’s team clearly understands the most important issues to remediate first. An updated accessibility statement reflecting the audit’s finding will be supplied to the client to add to their site.

Paths to Compliance Options

Aten supplies client with recommended paths to compliance based on the findings of their audit. The three most common paths are:

  1. The website’s design and experience is mostly accessible and most issues lie in the content
    • Aten runs automated scans of the site using Pope Tech, or client’s recommended service, to find all content related issues
    • Aten runs a content training(s) for the team
    • Client fixes content issues
    • Monthly check-ins and scans are in place to make sure client is addressing the issues
  2. The website’s design and development are in decent shape but some work is needed to address any theming related accessibility issues
    • Only minor design and development updates needed that were usually found with automated tools, such as color contrast
    • Aten prioritizes and creates solutions for issues found
    • Aten resolves these issues, or helps the client team resolve these issues
    • Final scan is done after issues have been addressed to ensure accessibility compliance
  3. The website requires a new design and build in order to address major accessibility issues
    • This tends to be a site with many interactive features or a site created with little to no knowledge of digital accessibility
    • This path is recommended when retrofitting the current site will require more time than a new site theme with built in accessibility features
